Very nice Roland,

Are those lead bloks clamping the gun?

Daniel

Yes it is a lead bloks, I prefer that than leather, I use wood bloks too ;-)

Have you tried ThermoLoc? I'm actually doing a little gun project (prettying up a cylinder) so I made a clamping style fixture with it. The cylinder snaps into place even before I tighten the vise to clamp it down.

Since the plastic formed itself exactly to the surface of the cylinder there's no chance for scratching or scarring.

For something to heavy to hold 'over' the vise I'd just use two 'slabs' of ThermoLoc (with some grocery sack plastic between them at the bottom so they can't touch and stick together) and clamp the piece in the vise. Once it cooled I'd have a set of perfectly formed vise jaws.

Roland,

I would love to see how you develop your scroll pattern using those bands of negative space. Do you start by laying out the bands or do you lay out the scroll and superimpose the bands over it?

Thanks,

Roger Bleile

Steve, I use thermoloc too but for a little parts or for the side plate.
I put the thermoloc on the block of wood. It is easier to clamp.

Roger I start by laying out the bands and after I draw the scroll in the free space.

That looks like an even better idea - the way you do it you have nice clearance all around the part so nothing's in the way of your work. Plus you can slide the wood back and forth in the vise to keep the bit you're working on more easily centered.

Thanks, for a good grip, it is better if you do some carving line on the wood.
You see that on the second picture ;-)

One more evolution:

Good point on grooving the wood - ThermoLoc doesn't stick to anything but itself so it needs something it can form to in order to get the mechanical bond.

I'm going to have to grab a chunk of 2x4 and make myself a 'base' or two so I have them when I need them.

The face and back aren't finished yet, I must do the lettring and few little finition ;-)
For information: all engraving was made with Palm control, I didn't use my hammer and chisel for this work.

Outstanding design and execution in my opinion.

A pleasure to see it.

Thanks,
Peter
