Hi everyone. This is a Uberti 1858 Remington. Silver inlay, bead punch background. The grips could fit better but this was a first try.

This will be cased with a matching .45 Colt conversion cylinder.

Hi,

A very very nice piece of work there.

Can you tell us a little about it??

Great Photos and a great gun that anyone would be proud to own.

Since it seems from your quote (schools and Tools) you are self trained??

What tools did you use to make such a great work of art?

How long have you been engraving?

Just would like more information on how you got so good!!!

Congrats on winning a Airgraver Classic

Regards,
AirAmp

Hi Ron ... you're the best buddy. Looking forward to December's show. I might have this Remington sold as soon as the case is in.

Thanks Airamp, I've been hangin' around this forum here for a bit as you know but just never thought about this show + tell section. Aside from the bracelet tutorial, I've been kinda holdin' out ... unintentionally of course.

I took a beginner class 3 years ago where I basically learned how to sharpen. From then on I am self taught. Studying every book I can get my hands on as well practicing my drawing skills.

Generous friends like Ron Nott have given me a little push here and there. I'm practicing the bulino technique now after meeting with Carl Bleile. I'm looking forward to meeting his brother Roger who is also a very talented engraver and author. The kind of knowledge that is passed on in any of these forums can't compare to what is learned in experience through others that you can trust. Brian Powley is over in Ohio and I'd like to get over to visit with him too. Great people that have taken their time to share their knowledge and friendship are the ones whose legacy truly lives on. As long as I continue to engrave the best that I can, I'll never let their influence be forgotten. It is this reason why I will try to help and tutor new folks the best I can. Passing on knowledge should be the gift that keeps on giving .... and one that will keep engraving alive and strong.

As for tools ... my current tools have served me well and I am still working toward the Palm Control .... the Holy Grail of tools. I'll leave it at that because the ability to do this work is not hidden in the tool.

I engrave full time and began this Remington as a personal project which kinda got out of control when one of the jewelry stores in Charleston expressed interest in displaying it. The majority of work I do is wholesale + contract jewelry engraving. I engrave firearms for fun and simply to satisfy my need for a good challenge now and again.

oh ... by the way ... the footer quote is just a bit of my humor.:)

Chris

Hi Van ... we were posting at the same time. Thanks for checking it out. I've shown this before but these are the latest and best photos I have of this project. You're one of the first to see these closeups.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the Information.

Yes it always seems to be best when you visit with someone better than yourself when learning something.

It is just the little comments that are made that turn out to be the biggest help.

They are great pearls of wisdom and experience.

Just a fantastic job on this Gun.

Hi Curt ... thank-you, I can get larger photos on this site. You have no idea how hard it is to keep myself from dropping in a conversion cylinder and fanning the hammer.:yesnod: My replacement should be here in the mail any day.

Gail ... kind words such as yours are what help keep the fires going strong. Many thanks.

I might have a little idea of how hard it is. Thirty years ago, it was real difficult to find a can within walking distance of my front door that didn't already have a bullet hole or three in it. :)

Curt ... all the time I was waiting for the case, I had to hide it and forget it.

I took apart instead and swapped out the trigger for an old case hardened one I had laying around (never used). Looks a lot better than the scratched blued trigger in the previous photos.

------

Finally got the case in for this and it's off to the customer this weekend. I didn't get a powder flask. I figure if the customer wants a matching .45 Colt conversion cylinder, I can make a bullet block for that section so it hold both the cylinder and six rounds.

For a short time in the late 1860s, Remington shipped their revolvers and revolving carbines with drop-in metallic cartridge conversion cylinders which were chambered for .46 Remington rimfire.

enjoy ...

Hi Chris

I was so busy looking at the engraving that I didn't even notice the trigger. Did they ship it with the scratches or did you have to try it out just a little? :)

You are right, the replacement trigger does look better.

Got Ron Smiths Advanced Scroll book today! I'll probably be reading the rest of the night :)

Catch ya later
