Jim Small's "In House" Folder

I wanted to share with you some photo's of some great work by our friend Jim Small. Jim is well known to most of us for his engraving and design skills. He does it all, guns, knives, jewelry, and various one of a kind items. However, he also is an exceptional knifemaker as well. He has a long history and has been commissioned to make some very special knives over the years. Jim was a featured teacher and narrator for PBS on a series about custom knifemaking...

Here is a folder that he recently made, and engraved. The workmanship is outstanding in every way. It "walks the talk..."

RS..Thanks for posting this beautiful knife made by Jim. I knew Jim was a fine engraver, but I didn't know he made knives. The other thing that caught my attention was the way he engraved the Torque screws. Two hats off.

Jim was one of the founding members of the knifemakers guild. He also did a television how-to knifemaking/engraving show that is replayed on public television every so often.


Jim had this one in Atlanta. Very nice. :cheers2:

I am a follower of Jim Small's engravings and in my opinion he is an extraordinary engraver. But his human quality also is important .
I consider my friend to him.

The geometric designs Jim does are amazing. He does some slick trick cuts for these various patterns.

It doesn't show it well in these photos but he has 3 times as many lines in each shaded leaf than most.

Steve was dead on target when he said that these photo's don't show the detail well. I have such a hard time getting my "web size" photo's to look good. I had another image to work with, and was able to bring out some more detail and not lose so much of it in the downsize process. I'm better with tractors than I am with computers..(grin..) I wish you all could just look at the knife in your hand to see Jim's work.. Anyway, let's give this another try here...

Vintage Jim! It just doesn't get any better than this. Just the right amount of color and contrast so as not to lose you or get dizzy. I've always enjoyed the way he uses the tiny squares to make up a pattern. Nothing more to say, just another exceptional piece, looking forward now to the next!

You gentlemen are to nice. I don't make allot of knives only a few each year.
Most of my time is spent studying and engraving. RB Slaughter did a outstanding job on the photos and everyone I get from him is better than the last. Rich is becoming a ( if not already ) a fine photo artist. I will tell Rich the same thing I have told Jim Cooper...."A knife is not finished untill there is a fine photo to remember it by."

I too have a great admiration for both Jim's work and as a person. Back in the mid 80's, I watched Jim's presentation of "How to Make a Knife" on Georgia PBS. Before this, I knew very little about hand made knives; but this show was my inspiration and some 30 years later I'm still making knives. It has been a wonderful part time business and source of extra income, as well as very fullfilling. Met a lot of good people in the knife industry during this time also. So, thank you, Jim Small and Georgia PBS for this great learning experience.
