Hi. I have been a jeweler for almost 30 years (since art school) and last October took an engraving class. About 8 years ago I designed and began making a line of work that is fabricated sterling or gold with braided horse hair set in the metal. I do the metal work and the braiding myself. As this line gained a wider audience, I began going out west (I live in Virginia) to market and sell the work. There I became interested in engraving as a result of my fascination with bits and spurs. I have specific ideas about incorporating engraving into my work, but am still just in the kintergarden stage. My husband, a metal artist and sculptor of 32 years, is beginning to take an interest in knife making. We do not usually "work" together, but I may even attempt to engrave some knife handles for Tom. Thank all of you who take the time to post information about how to do things.

Hello astrajewelry,
Welcome to the forum of engraving addiction!
I also braid horsehair, nothing too elaborate, just some simple bracelets and keyfobs. There is a picture of one of my bracelets in my album of 'other work'. It is bangle style, and made from the tail hair of a champion reining horse. The man it was made for wears it every day.
