Default New to the Forum

Though I have been making knives for almost 30 years, and have had many of them engraved, I have never attempted any engraving work myself. I purchased the tools some time ago, and more or less set up an engaving bench. It has been staring at me and mocking me ever since. Though very intimidated, I have decided that I will finally give it it a try.
Perusing the forum has been great, and has added some incentive to get started. I know for certain that I will be taking much more from the forum than I can contribute, but hope to give something back eventually.
Wolfgang

Welcome to the forum!

If you add your location to your profile there might be some folks in your area who can give you some tips.

I'll also pass along some of the good advice I was given: a one week class might seem like it's expensive, but compared to the two or three years it would take to learn the same things on your own they're a real good buy.

Thank you for the welcome and the advice. I have been planning on taking a course, hopefully it will work out for me this year. Martin Butler and Tim Herman are very good friends. Martin lives very close to me, and will take the time to get me started. Tim has also offered to spend a few days with me. With that I should be able to at least get a start.

Check out Wolfgang's knives. http://www.wolfeknives.com Wolf is one of the top knifemaking artists living today. I mean it.. His work and what he does with a file to flute and sculpture is something. If you ever get a chance to meet Wolf and see his work first hand it is obvious why collectors pay large figures to own these pieces. Wolf, do you have some larger and close-up pictures of some of the knives you can post? I know other top knifemakers like Tim as well as myself have always been in awe of Wolf's work.

Wolfe has been one of my idols for decades now and it would be an honor to spend some time teaching what little I know about engraving. Wolfe this will be fun and like old times at the Bayfield show. Talked with Elizabeth a bit today and she is rarin to go!

Steve,Tim, thank you very much for the compliments. Without any false modesty I have to admit to myself that my knives are mere trinkets when I compare to the work shown on this forum. It is truly humbling. I have attached some photos of my more recent work. Unfortunately much of my work does not get photographed because collectors who have waited years are anxcious to take delivery.

Hi Wolfgang,
Welcome here.

That must be because you are such a perfectionist that you see all the flaws in your work (that only you see!) and are not really satisfied with the knifes because of them. Otherwise it could be mistaken for the modesty thing easily.
your knifes ROCK!
You are a true Master.

Awesome Wolf... I agree with Daniel. The knives Rock! Thank you for posting these pictures. How are you coming with the engraving? Do you have the PalmControl up and running?
Thanks again.

Steve, I have had my bench all set up with everything I need for about a year now. It taunts me every time I walk past. Having spent some time on this forum has given me some courage.
I would like to get a new silent compressor, the one I have is very loud, makes me jump when it starts up. I will contact you soon to get one of the ones you list for sale. After the Santa Barbara show I will get Tim Herman and Martin Butler to get me started, hopefully that will keep me from starting out with bad habits.

Steve's tools use so little air you don't really need a compressor at all - check the various threads in the Lindsay AirGraver Info sub-forum about powering them with HPA (High Pressure Air) or CO2. There's a very nice thread on using scuba tanks as your air source.

Do that and there's no worry about start up noises, just a need to keep a spare around so you don't run out in the middle of your fun.

Forgot to mention - saw the pictures of your knives in the thread about the big Canadian Knife Show over at the BLADE Magazine forums. Looked just as good there as here.
