Default a bunch of new scrimshaw, incl one on Mother of Pearl

Hey everyone! I haven't posted for a while, so it must be time to catch up. Happy New Year to you all. Here's a bunch of stuff I haven't posted here before (penny for size reference, as always):

-----

A lot of people have asked me if I've ever scrimmed on Mother of Pearl. So I figured I'd better try it. It's, um, challenging, but beautiful. This piece looks quite different with even the most subtle shift of the lighting, so I figured the best I could do was post a couple of photos and hope you get the idea!

"Tundra Elegance" (Tundra Swan)
multicolor scrimshaw on Mother of Pearl
.75 by 2 inches
This piece is framed, it's not jewelry.

-----

Ladybug pendant
multicolor scrimshaw on mammoth ivory
3/8 by 1-1/8 inch

-----

Longhorn pendant
scrimshaw on pre-ban elephant ivory
30mm diameter

-----

This was in another thread a while back but in case you missed it:

"Catching the Scent" (wolf)
scrimshaw on pre-ban elephant ivory
approx 1-5/8 by 1-3/4 inches (40x45mm)
Also framed, not jewelry

-----

"Friend or Foe?"
multicolor scrimshaw on pre-ban elephant ivory
1-1/2 by 2-3/8 inches
framed

-----

This is the third piece I've done for one particular client, she gets one every year, and has owned a lot of these cute little dogs in her life!

"Missy" (Sheltie Dog)
scrimshaw on pre-ban elephant ivory
30x40mm

-----

This was done for a man who special ordered this for his wife. She'd had a similar piece that was stolen 25 years ago, and he said he'd been looking for a long time for someone who could replicate it. The ivory pendant was custom made by Boone Trading Co, and I scrimmed the rose to his specifications, as close to the original as possible.

Rose/Heart Pendant
scrimshaw on pre-ban elephant ivory
18mm

-----

Okay this last one isn't scrimshaw, but I thought you might like to see the other side of my business! This is a commissioned piece I finished right before Christmas.

"Got Treats?" (Joker and Kid Rock)
colored pencil and graphite on gray Stonehenge paper
10 by 10.5 inches

-----

That's all for now! There will be plenty more to come. I'm looking forward to seeing lots of you in Reno. Weather permitting, if Donner pass is open, I'll be hanging around on the weekend. Say hi if you see me wandering.

-Katherine

WOW!! They are beautiful, can I ask a few questions?
First is scrimshaw anything like pen and ink drawings? I do some pen and ink for people and enjoy it, and these look a little like them real close.
Second can I scrimshaw on Black stones? or rock?

your work is truely unbelieveable I would love to see it in person some day.

My intrested are in livestock and show livestock so I would try make some trophy knives and buckets

Thank you Daniel, Kfil, Jonessa, Shadowran!

Shadowran, to answer your questions:

Scrimshaw is a form of engraving, done on ivory or bone or similar materials. The images are engraved into the surface (dots or lines or both) and inked to produce the image. It can definitely make an image that looks like a pen and ink drawing, but the image is engraved and not drawn on the surface.

I don't know if you could scrim a rock, I've never tried.

You might consider visiting an engraving show so you can see in person some of the stuff that's posted on line (not just scrim, but all sorts of engraving). Reno is a pretty easy trip from CA assuming the mountain pass is open, and there will be lots of eye candy to see at the FEGA show at the end of this month. You're a few hours south of me, but it's not a terrible distance even from Tulare.

Katherine,
Truly beautiful work as always! I think that wolf got the sent of that goose. Best not leave them laying to close to each other. You might come back sometime and find nothing but feathers.

Thank you Tom, JJ, Ddbltrbl, Gravalance!

Yeah, I hate it when the images kill each other. Good thing the wolf lives half way across the country now, it was a real menace to some of the other ones! Hee hee!
