getting back into drumming
Hi folks,
I decided to sign up for the guitar Center drum off this year. I started drumming when I was 12, and pretty much played through college. Since then, it has been few and far between. I go and play tomorrow night for the first round of the competition. here is what I have come up with for a solo. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7PgZ3gtVBSU&feature=plcp Thanks for watching! Tom

Re: getting back into drumming
Outstanding
It never ceases to amaze me as to how many engravers are also musicians. Brian Powley is also a drummer. Good luck in the competition Tom. Roger

Thanks guys! yes, I see many talented musicians in the engraving community. Brian messaged me about his drumming too. (maybe i could beat him at fencing...)

Tom - Super solo!
I really appreciate the freedom and melodic feel - reminds me of hearing Max Roach and Elvin Jones and others playing solo here in SF. Fun to connect the grooves of engraving and music. I've had parallel lives in art and music for some time - a few clips: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUKYcZ9xgNI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wzl5NzjauX8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uUpaFar-XCs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJy23-bHNkY Warm regards and heartfelt thanks to all on this forum for inspiring my return to engraving - Bob |

Re: getting back into drumming
My music teacher encouraged me to stick with horses and motorcycles. The fencing I like though I warn you I'm a lefty. I'm getting a bit old and stiff for any type of fencing foil or post.
I'm hoping to dust my wings off in the near future. A VariEze friend was over last weekend and took me flying. It was a huge motivator to get my butt back in the air. My health is better but I'm having trouble finding the time, money and grit to get my airplanes back in the air. I'll keep plugging. Thanks for the update Tom. John |

Re: getting back into drumming
Hi John,
Flying was my first love as a kid, but I never did it. i got glasses in the 5th grade, and was devastated for years. No life dream for many years after that. I didn't have the fortitude to pursue music in college. i was always afraid i wasn't good enough. I even quit a very elite Drum Corps after making the snare line, because I always thought somehow, i would turn out to not be good enough. I fenced at Drew University for one year, before i quit school and joined the Army. I had started in High School at a local college. I faced a very tough lefty in Epee once. I used some counter 4 moves on him, because he tried to come from my outside (6 position) and blow through my guard with a heavy binding move, and hit the body. It worked on everyone else, but my counter 4 backed him off. Eventually, he won in extra time when i had a brief brain cramp, and he got me on the wrist. This was back in 1985, i think, when it was still 5 touch matches. get back into the air! Tom

Thanks SE.
next round is Tuesday. I have reworked the solo a bit. Anticipating stiffer competition, and my ideas keep evolving.
